I created this site to gather in one place the essays, reportage, and criticism I’ve done, mostly over the last 5-6 years. Although I’ve written on a wide range of subjects, from college sports to economic history to the legacy of writers like William Faulkner, John O’Hara, and George Orwell, I hope that together these pieces form some kind of unity of style and sensibility.
I am a contributing editor to City Journal, a policy magazine published by the Manhattan Institute, a New York-based think tank. Most of my recent writing has been for City Journal, though I’ve also written for Notre Dame Magazine, The Hedgehog Review, Bookforum, and various other publications.
I am a lawyer by training and profession. I have spent more than twenty years working in the New York offices of two large firms, first Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP, and since 2012, Quinn Emanuel LLP. I divide my time between Brooklyn and Vero Beach, Florida.
I hope you enjoy reading what you find here. I’m always conscious of the privilege of having an audience and of the duty to reward my reader’s attention. — JJC
